Mother's Day 2015

Are you ready for Mother’s Day?  It’s less than 2 weeks away!

Moms are amazing women.  She raised you, gave you her time, supported you and provided you with the foundation to become the person you are today.  Our lives are filled with memories of the times she taught us lessons (yes, even those really important ones we didn’t want to learn), the unconditional love and the support to keep going when life didn’t quite go the way we thought it should.  Her love uplifted us and helped shape us into the people we are today.

Last year Mother’s Day celebrated its 100th anniversary, but did you know how it started?  It was Anna Jarvis who is credited with the the origins of the holiday when she wanted to honor her mother and her mother’s lifetime of noble efforts. "It wasn't to celebrate all mothers. It was to celebrate the best mother you've ever known—your mother—as a son or a daughter." That's why Anna Jarvis stressed the singular "Mother's Day," rather than the plural "Mothers' Day," according to historian Antolini.

And while Anna was sorely disappointed in the commercialization of Mother’s Day, I would argue that the spirit she intended lives on.  Yes, we like to buy our mothers flowers and gifts and sappy greeting cards and as mothers, we love to get them. But most of us also spend the day with our moms and children to celebrate.  We have family dinners or brunch and spend quality time together reminiscing about childhood moments or about how horribly mom embarrassed us that time when we were 15.  Our little ones proudly present us with the handmade crafts that mothers cherish forever.  Isn’t that what Mother’s Day is ultimately about?  It’s the special bond between mother and child and how they choose to celebrate it – whether it’s a big family gathering or flowers and a treasured phone call from a continent away, or even shared mimosas on a cruise together.

Life is too short to waste.  As long as it makes you happy, do it!

Cheers and Happy Mother's Day
